Angela Hunter was
born in 1951 in Galashiels, and is now married with two grown up
daughters and living in Innerleithen. Since graduating from Edinburgh
College of Art in 1999 with a B.A.(Hons.) in Sculpture she has been
able to continue sculpting; working on both commissions and gallery
work.
Her preferred medium is bronze, making small works in wax
and larger pieces in plaster or clay for casting in either bronze or
bronze resin. She is essentially a figurative artist, sculpting both
human figure and animal studies. Her degree show 'Plaster Sheep' have
featured in several exhibitions and magazine articles.
In 2004 she
was commissioned to make a full size Damascus goat and two kids for
the owners of Dunderave Castle on Loch Fyne.
Her penguin
series 'Penguinicity' and 'Penguinicity II' have been an ongoing
success and are very popular wherever they are exhibited. A special
series of penguins were commissioned by Dundee City Council and
comprises of five bronze ones walking along a wall at the City
Churches in the city centre. Other commissions for Dundee are a
monkey on an information sign interfering with the lettering on the
header board to read "In Ma Fair Toon" and a red squirrel
hiding in a tree guard.
In 2004/5 She
was commissioned to sculpt a trophy for Melrose Rugby Club to be
awarded to the club members 'Player of the Year' in memory of the
late Stuart Henderson, who was a long standing secretary to the club.
She completed a
large commission for the Turnbull Clan Association in 2009, making
a monument to commemorate the event whereby the first 'Turnbull'
William de Rule saved King Robert The Bruce from being gored by a
wounded bull.
In 2011 she was
commissioned by East Lothian Council to make a series of animal
sculptures for a wildlife trail round the new Lochend Campus of
Dunbar Upper Primary School
Also in 2011 was
commissioned by Riverside Inverclyde to create a sculpture which
captured the heyday of Gourock as a holiday destination and
embarkation point for the Clyde
Steamers. For this she created the "Girl on a Suitcase"
which depicts a young girl, full of anticipation in readiness
to depart on an adventure down the Clyde, "Doon the Watter"
sitting on the suitcase with bucket and spade in hand.
Her work is shown
in Thompson's Galleries in both Marylebone and Aldeburgh, Cyril
Gerber Fine Art and Compass Gallery in Glasgow, Peter Potter Gallery,
Haddington and several smaller galleries. She shows regularly in
annual exhibitions with Visual Arts Scotland, Royal Glasgow Institute
and Paisley Art Institute.
